Petaluma
A proud river town rooted in ranches, henhouses, and hard work — now one of California's most celebrated historic downtowns, with a working waterfront, world-class arts scene, and more restaurants per capita than cities ten times its size.
The Egg Basket of the World
Long before Sonoma County was wine country, it was chicken country — and Petaluma was the undisputed capital of it all. By the early 1900s, Petaluma's poultry ranchers were shipping millions of eggs and tens of thousands of chickens to markets across California and beyond. The city's nickname, "Egg Basket of the World," wasn't boastful — it was a statement of fact.
The secret was the Petaluma incubator, a kerosene-heated hatching machine perfected by local inventor Lyman Byce in 1879. That invention transformed small backyard flocks into industrial egg operations almost overnight, and Petaluma became the center of a poultry empire stretching across the surrounding hills and valleys.
Today the old hatcheries and feed stores are mostly gone, but the legacy lives on in street names, museum collections, and the annual Butter & Egg Days parade — one of the oldest community parades in California. The farms are still out there too, tucked into the rolling hills of west Petaluma.
City Timeline
Farm, Ranch & Table
Poultry Heritage
Petaluma's poultry tradition runs deep. The Petaluma Historical Library & Museum at 20 Fourth Street chronicles the full story of the egg industry — incubators, breed records, and all — in a gorgeous 1904 Carnegie Library building.
Farm-to-Table Capital
Surrounded by working dairy, poultry, and vegetable farms, Petaluma is reputed to have more restaurants per capita than much larger cities. Michelin-recognized spots like Central Market, Stockhome, and Cucina Paradiso source ingredients from farms just down the road.
Butter & Egg Days
Every April, Petaluma throws one of California's oldest community parades — Butter & Egg Days. The celebration honors the city's agricultural roots with a parade, carnival, and street fair through the historic downtown.
Clover Sonoma & Local Dairies
Clover Sonoma, one of California's most beloved dairy brands, is headquartered in Petaluma. The region's rich pastureland and coastal fog produce some of the state's finest dairy products — still made the way they've always been.
Amy's Kitchen
The national organic food company Amy's Kitchen was founded in Petaluma and remains headquartered here — one of the city's largest employers and a symbol of the region's deep roots in quality, natural food production.
Lagunitas Brewing Co.
World-famous Lagunitas Brewing Company calls Petaluma home, with a sprawling taproom and beer garden at 1280 North McDowell Blvd. Their flagship IPAs are brewed right here and shipped around the globe.
The Petaluma River & Slough
The Petaluma River is the city's lifeblood — a slow, winding tidal waterway that has shaped Petaluma's character since long before the first settler arrived. Stretching roughly 14 miles from Petaluma through the Petaluma Marsh and out into San Pablo Bay, the river once carried steamboats loaded with eggs, wheat, and livestock to and from San Francisco markets every day.
Today the riverfront has been transformed into one of Sonoma County's most scenic recreational corridors. The Petaluma Marina offers slips, launch ramps, and easy access to the river's calm waters. Kayakers and canoeists paddle through the Petaluma Marsh Wildlife Area, a vast wetland complex teeming with egrets, herons, and migratory birds. The slough's brackish edges are a paradise for wildlife watchers and anglers alike.
Shollenberger Park, tucked along the river at 1400 Cader Lane, offers a beloved 2.25-mile loop trail winding through 165 acres of wetlands — part of the larger 500-acre Petaluma Wetlands system. Steamer Landing Park provides a direct connection to the waterfront with open lawns and river views right in the heart of town.
On the Water
Historic Downtown Shopping
Petaluma's downtown commercial district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places — a dense grid of Victorian-era iron-front buildings packed with independent boutiques, bookshops, antique stores, wine tasting rooms, and acclaimed restaurants. No chains, no strip malls — just real local retail in one of California's most beautifully preserved historic downtowns.
🛍️ Boutiques & Apparel
Kentucky Street, Western Avenue, and Petaluma Blvd North are lined with independent clothing boutiques, gift shops, and lifestyle stores — the kind of local retail that has been pushed out of most California cities.
📚 Books & Antiques
Downtown Petaluma punches above its weight for used bookshops and antique dealers. Browsers can spend hours working through furniture, vintage goods, rare books, and local art in stores spread across the historic district.
🍷 Wine Tasting Rooms
Several Sonoma County wineries maintain downtown Petaluma tasting rooms, making it easy to sample local vintages without driving out to the vineyards. The walkable downtown lets you do a wine crawl on foot.
🌾 Petaluma Market
The independently owned Petaluma Market at 210 Western Avenue is a community institution — a full-service grocery with local produce, Sonoma County cheeses, and the kind of knowledgeable staff you don't find at big-box stores.
🎨 Artisan Makers
The creative economy is strong in Petaluma. Ceramics studios, jewelry makers, custom furniture craftspeople, and food artisans all operate in and around the historic downtown — many with storefronts open to the public.
☕ Coffee & Cafes
Downtown Petaluma's café scene is outstanding — independent coffee roasters, breakfast spots, and bakeries fill the ground floors of the historic iron-front buildings, each with their own character and loyal neighborhood following.
